Kinning Cross Blog: Not Riding The Champs?

Kinning Cross Blog: Not Riding The Champs?

For cross season and the upcoming Kinning Cross League, we asked Glenn Kinning to give us some insight into his own training and provide some tips to those starting, or looking to improve at the discipline. Glenn is the owner Kinning Cycles, Irish MTB Champ, Commonwealth MTB rider and Worlds Cross rider.

I've heard a load of excuses for guys not riding the Ulster Cross Champs, never mind the all Ireland champs. Some are passable with xmas dinners and family commitments, but not racing as guys are in with the "big boys", "will get lapped" or "can't do the extra lap" is a bit soft. I travelled to Belgium to race the big boys and get lapped, Mallusk is only up the road.

My team of hard workers are putting a massive effort in to make a great all-round course. It's not just turn up early on the morning and stick poles in the ground. It all starts a few days before to make sure it all fits together nicely. We have a course that will be European standard, 3 meters wide, no single track, proper start and finish area, double pits, no climb like the Ice Bowl and some sand. The course measures out at 2 miles, this reduces the chance of getting lapped. Big long exposed straights will lead to groups forming. No excuse if you ask me.

The races are split into age categories, so that's one level playing field. Guys have been racing the same guys for the last 4 months so why not trying racing a different kettle of fish. A and B riders will be mixed together so B riders will be getting some A riders scalps. Put your self out of the comfort zone, experience riding the champs, Ulster and All Ireland.
